Jose Reyes and Bart Velasquez both won their first-round matches for Chestatee in the opening round of the Class AAAA traditional wrestling state tournament on Thursday at the Macon Centreplex in Macon.
Reyes (38-4), at 106 pounds, defeated Cairo High’s Bryan Johnson (43-10) in his only match of the day, and Velasquez (28-6) beat Alexander’s Bryce Holloman (31-13) to start off the tournament.
The other six War Eagles in the tournament fell in the first round but will continue their quest to become state placers when the wrestleback rounds start tomorrow.
120-pounder Austin Donaldson (41-15) lost to Cody Stames (43-12) of Alexander. Christian Zapatero (43-9) fell to Rashad Williams (22-6) of Cass at 126 pounds, and Zack Cheshire (132) was defeated by Alexander’s Chris Achenbach (21-13).
Tommy McCormack (35-14) lost to Devante Mosely (29-4) of Stone Mountain in a painful match for the 160-pound wrestler.
“He broke his hand in sectionals,” coach Carey Whitlow noted. “So it’s hard for him to wrestle like that.”
Cody Humphries (37-13) went to state in the 170-pound weight class and lost to Stone Mountain’s Damien Schofield (35-3), while Grayson Entrekin (28-16) lost to Michael Mackfield (33-12) of Troup County in the 195-pound weight class.
Despite only advancing two wrestlers to the quarterfinals, Whitlow is still pleased with this year’s team and all of the successes they have seen.
“This is the big show,” he said. “Everyone that came here is in the top-16 in the state, and we’re real proud of all of them.”
The War Eagles begin wrestling with Reyes and Velasquez in their quarterfinal matches at 9 a.m. this morning in Macon.
