The Riverside Military Academy tennis team’s first season back in the Georgia High School Association ended Tuesday in Gainesville with a 3-0 loss to Greater Atlanta Christian in second round of the Class AA state playoffs.

The Eagles, who returned from the Georgia Independent Schools Association to GHSA at the beginning of this school year, were unable to record a win before the defending state champion Spartans secured the team win with a sweep of doubles and a win at No. 1 singles.

When matches were suspended, the Eagles’ Joe Kowalski had won his first set at No. 2 singles while Matt Lowery led 3-0 in the second set of No. 3 singles.

Despite the shutout loss, Riverside coach Jennifer Grobeck was pleased with her team’s performance this season, which included a playoff win in the first round against Rockmart last week.

“They did terrific,” Grobeck said. “To move back into the GHSA with a new coach and a new team, I’m very proud of their effort.”

The Eagles’ tennis team is part of an increasing list of Riverside teams and athletes making state playoff appearances against their new opponents. The football, basketball, soccer teams and track individuals have also earned that honor.

Greater Atlanta Christian visits the winner of Westminster and North Oconee in the state quarterfinals next Tuesday.
