The Chestatee High boys and girls cross country teams both placed second in the Gilmer Cross Country Invitational on Saturday in Ellijay. Chestatee's Sarah Beth English finished second overall in the girls race with a time of 20 minutes, 42 seconds. Shelby Bennett was fifth overall for the Lady War Eagles and Paige Williams placed 10th.
For the boys, Chestatee's Jason Dang took fifth with a time of 17:39. Jose Reyes placed sixth (17:41) and Jeremy Gross was ninth (18:07) for the War Eagles.
NORTH HALL WINS IN CHATTANOOGA: Led by Brandon Lawson's fourth place finish with a time of 16 minutes, 40 seconds, the Trojans won the overall team title out of 30 teams in the Chattanooga Cross Country Festival on Saturday. Luis Gonzalez was seventh (17:02) and Witt Nix was 12th (17:23) for North Hall. Victoria Rogers placed fifth for the North Hall girls at 20:43.
Softball
BUFORD TAKES THREE GAMES: The Lady Wolves finished the Brookwood Invitational with a 5-0 win against Loganville, 7-2 victory against Class AAAAA's Luella and 5-3 win against Jones County all on Saturday. Against Loganville, Bria Bush pitched her fifth complete game and third shutout of the season. Jordan Deep had three hits for the Lady Wolves (22-8), including a solo home run. Kallie Case had three hits and three stolen bases.
Against Luella, Tessa Daniels complied her 10th complete game of the season and allowed only four hits. Remington Hasty and Deep each had two hits.
Against Jones County, Hasty had three hits and a triple for Buford, and Madyson Wynegar added two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Buford faces Westminster in the Region 6-AA tournament on Wednesday in Atlanta.
Volleyball
WEST HALL WINS SILVER BRACKET: The Lady Spartans picked up wins against Tucker (25-18, 25-19), Lakeview Academy (25-21, 25-18) and a pair of victories against Habersham Central to win the silver bracket of the Battle of the Branch on Saturday in Flowery Branch.
Laykin Herford had 50 assists for West Hall (29-4), and LeNiesha Kearse had 10 blocked shots. Stephanie Rowland finished the day with 34 kills for the Lady Spartans, and Tonya Bennett added 10 kills. Carrie Ruis finished with 25 digs and eight aces for West Hall, which plays host to Oconee County and North Hall on Tuesday in Oakwood.
NORTH HALL TAKES THREE OF FOUR: The Lady Trojans defeated West Hall (25-21, 25-22), Habersham Central (21-25, 25-20, 16-14), Tucker (25-15, 25-23) and lost to George Walton Academy (24-26, 19-25) on Saturday at the Battle of the Branch in Flowery Branch.
Kristina Gregory had 39 assists, five assists and a blocked shot to lead the Lady Trojans. Sarah Paschall had 28 digs, seven kills and six blocked shots for North Hall, and McKenna Rushton chipped in 17 kills, three blocks, five digs and three aces.
Allie Staub had 20 digs for North Hall, and Sydney Cleveland added 22 digs and four kills.
North Hall visits West Hall on Tuesday in Oakwood.
BUFORD SPLITS TWO MATCHES: The Lady Wolves defeated Providence Christian (25-21, 25-14) and lost to North Gwinnett (27-25, 25-12) on Saturday in the Gwinnett County Championships at the Suwanee Sports Academy. Maggie Roper had 11 kills and 15 digs for Buford (14-10) and Bailey Hicks added 28 assists.
LAKEVIEW ACADEMY TOPS LANIER: The Lions topped Lanier (25-6, 25-17) with seven assists from Megan McIntire on Saturday in the Battle of the Branch in Flowery Branch. In a 28-26, 25-13 loss to Johnson, Katie White had 12 kills and Molly Gay added five assists for the Lady Lions. Gay and Bailey Towles each had four assists for Lakeview Academy in a 23-25, 25-20, 15-6 loss to Hart County.
In the final match against West Hall, Jamie Nixon had eight kills for Lakeview, who lost in the first round of the silver bracket.
Lakeview Academy visits Jefferson on Tuesday for a tri-match against Morgan County.
NORTH GEORGIA CHRISTIAN TOPS UNITY CHRISTIAN: The Lady Chargers (8-3) topped Unity Christian Academy 25-12, 25-17, 25-9 on Saturday at Shorter College in Rome. North Georgia Christian faces Grace Christian on Tuesday in Hiram.
