Lady Spartans 5-0 at volleyball tournament

The West Hall volleyball team won five straight matches at the East Hall Invitational Saturday to capture the gold championship.

The Lady Spartans (18-2) were led by Tanya Bennett (28 kills), Stephanie Rowland (24 kills), Kelsi Jones (nine blocks, 26 aces), LaNiesha Kearse (nine blocks), Laykin Herford (82 assists) and Carrie Ruis (18 digs).

West Hall beat Jackson County 25-10, 25-17; Hart County 25-20, 25-20; Tallulah Falls 25-11, 25-13; and Monroe Area 25-23, 27-29, 15-7 to advance to the gold bracket championship game.

The Lady Spartans took down Flowery Branch 25-22, 25-22 to emerge from the playdate unscathed.

West Hall will travel to Lanier on Tuesday for a tri-match against the hosts and Eastside.

FLOWERY BRANCH GOES 4-1 AT EAST HALL: Flowery Branch was led by Brittani Hill (21 kills, 11 digs, 12 assists), Kenzie Grewett (54 assists) and Colleen Grider (18 kills). The team compiled 15 team aces against Lumpkin County and 14 against Morgan County.

The Lady Falcons defeated Johnson 25-11, 25-23; Lumpkin County 25-18, 25-9; Morgan County 25-19, 25-6; Hart County 25-15, 25-21 and fell to West Hall 25-22, 25-22.

The Lady Falcons advanced all the way to the championship game of the East Hall Invitational Saturday before falling to West Hall.

 

 

BUFORD VOLLEYBALL WINS THREE: Buford was led by Maggie Roper (20 kills, eight digs, three aces), McKenzie Darrah (13 kills, seven aces), Bailey Hicks (39 assists, four aces), Mikhayla Riegel (12 aces, 19 digs).

The Lady Wolves topped Clarkson 25-4, 25-9; Paideia 25-19, 25-21; and Decatur 25-3, 21-25, 25-18.

Buford returns to play Tuesday at Greater Atlanta Christian.

JEFFERSON WINS BRONZE BRACKET:  The Lady Dragons traveled to the Georgia Challenge Tournament in Woodstock and finished 2-2 on the day. The Lady Wolves hosted a playdate Saturday and finished 3-0.

 

Jefferson was led by Cassie Metcalf (three aces, 19 kills), Amanda Daniel (five aces, 11 kills, 65 assists), Taylor Cramsey (five aces, 34 kills three assists), Eden Starnes (three aces, 12 kills), Sarah Wood (14 kills, seven assists) and Savanna Holland (three aces, 10 kills two assists).

 

In pool play Jefferson (11-4, 2-0 area) lost to Class AAAA opponent Kell in the first match (25-15, 15-25,15-12) and lost to Lambert (25-27, 25-10, 15-12) in the second.

In bracket play Jefferson knocked off Mundy’s Mill 25-14, 25-16. In the final Jefferson won 24-26, 25-21, 15-10.

Jefferson returns to the court Tuesday at Morgan County vs. the host school and North Oconee.

Softball

Buford finished 3-0 at the Buford Invitational Tournament Saturday: The Lady Wolves opened with a 6-0 win over Jefferson. Pitcher Rebekah Rude recorded her first win of the season and received offensive support from Jordan Deep (2 for 3, three-run homerun, four RBIs, two runs scored), Lexi Overstreet (2 for 3, two runs scored) and Madyson Wynegar (2 for 2, RBI).

Buford followed with a 14-0, five-inning win over Habersham Central. Tessa Daniels earned the win.

Kallie Case went 3 for 4 with a triple, a two-run homerun, two RBIs and three runs scored. Buford also received offense from Deep (2 for 4, double, RBI, two runs), Lanier Paul (3 for 3, double, RBI) and Daniels (2 for 3, two RBIs).

Buford took down Union County 4-1 in the final game of the day and Daniels, recorded another win on the rubber, allowing just one unearned run in five innings. Bria Bush actually started the game and pitched two inning of no-hit ball
