High school scoreboard: Riverside wins in double overtime thriller

The Riverside Military Academy basketball team returned from its holiday furlough with a 87-85 double overtime win against Banks County on Wednesday in Homer.

The Eagles (2-3, 1-1 8-AA), who haven’t played a game since Dec. 9, outscored Banks County 9-7 in the final overtime to edge the Leopards (9-3, 1-1 8-AA) and earn their first region win of the season.

Riverside had four players in double figures, led by Dylen Setzekorn and Brandon McKinney, who had 21 points each. Richard Tribble scored 17 points and John Ogunniya added 14 points.

Banks County also had four double-digit scorers, led by Ryan Griffin’s 25 points. Kane Duncan scored 21 points, Kevin Daniel scored 18 points and Chase Armour added 16 points.

Riverside plays host to Jefferson at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Banks County visits Union County at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

WRESTLING

Riverside drops two on the road

The Eagles lost to Dawson County 57-21 and Commerce 45-33 on Tuesday in Dawsonville.

Evan Sarhan (125 pounds), Diego Osegueda-Weiner (215) and Colton Keig (285) each won two matches for Riverside. Jacob Thompson (103), Drew Goodwin (112), Mancini Udogi (160) and Tyler Shipley (171) each won one match for Riverside.

Riverside will participate in the Region 8-AA Duals this weekend.

 

SWIMMING

Riverside tops Hall County swimmers

The Eagles earned 120 points to win an all-Hall County meet on Tuesday.

Flowery Branch finished second with 59 points. Gainesville finished third with 42 points and North Hall finished fourth with 29 points.

Matt Gallaway won the 100-meter breaststroke while Clay Thompson finished first in the 500 freestyle and was part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay. Both swimmers helped the Eagles win the 200 medley relay.

Riverside will participate in a Jan. 17 meet at the University of Georgia Natatorium.
