High school scoreboard: Gainesville wins with PKs

The Gainesville High girls soccer team picked up an area win by edging White County 3-2 in penalty kicks to win 1-0 on Tuesday at City Park.

Raquel Castillo, Claire Kannapel and Natalie Allen each scored penalty kicks for Gainesville (8-4, 4-3 Area 7-AAA). Brie Ballinger and Sam Ballinger scored for the Lady Warriors (8-4, 4-3).

Gainesville’s Hong Tran and White County’s Megan Runkle each had shutouts through regulation and overtime.

Gainesville plays host to North Hall at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. White County visits West Hall at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Gainesville boys 9, White County 1

Russ Puckett had a hat trick and two assists and Monish Lahari had two goals and two assists for the Red Elephants on Tuesday at City Park.

Yonis Yanes had a goal and three assists, Jesus Penaloza scored twice and Merly Velazquez added a goal for Gainesville (10-3, 6-2 Area 7-AAA).

Phillip Gaines and Marco Monreal combined for the win in goal for the Red Elephants.

Gainesville plays host to North Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. White County (2-12, 0-9) visits West Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Riverside Military boys 5, Dawson County 2

Danny Vergara scored four goals and John Ogunniya added one for the Eagles on Tuesday in Gainesville.

Steven Frady made seven saves in goal for Riverside (9-4, 5-1 Area 15-AA).

Riverside visits Lakeview Academy at 5 p.m. Thursday. Dawson County (10-4, 4-1) visits Towns County at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Creekview girls 6, Gainesville 1 (Monday)

Raquel Castillo scored the Lady Red Elephants’ lone goal off an assist from Lauren Joiner on Monday in Canton.

Hong Tran made eight saves in goal for Gainesville.

BASEBALL

Lakeview Academy 9, Commerce 4

Ralson Cash followed up Monday’s no-hitter with a two-home run, four-RBI night for the Lions on Tuesday in Commerce.

Tyler Ward pitched 6 2/3 innings with 10 strikeouts while going 2-for-3 at the plate for Lakeview (10-1, 4-0 Region 8-A).

Brett Armour was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Ross Beigler added a pair of doubles for the Lions.

Lakeview plays host to Prince Avenue at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Commerce (7-5, 4-1) visits Athens Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Creekview 10, Gainesville 5

Class AAA’s fourth-ranked Grizzlies broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to secure the win Tuesday in Canton.

Stephen Mason pitched 5 2/3 and allowed three earned runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate for Gainesville (7-7, 7-6 Region 7-AAA). Sloan Strickland was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and David Gonzalez added two hits for the Red Elephants.

Gainesville visits West Forsyth at 5:30 p.m. today.

Lumpkin County 13, White County 5

The Indians scored seven runs in the first two innings to win their eighth straight on Tuesday in Cleveland.

Chad Fulton was 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and four stolen bases for Lumpkin County (13-1, 11-1 Region 7-AAA). Devin Dunson, Chris Guthrie and Nick Leone each had two hits and Donnie Harper added two RBIs for the Indians.

Drew Uptegraph won his fourth game of the year, pitching a complete game and striking out seven.

Lumpkin County plays host to Flowery Branch at 5:30 p.m. today. White County (6-8, 4-8) visits West Hall at 5:30 p.m. today.

Jackson County 5, Franklin County 2

Larry Evans won his first game of the year, pitching a complete game and striking out five in the Panthers’ first region win Tuesday in Jefferson.

Rob Williams was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Kelly Moates was 2-for-2 for Jackson County (4-6, 1-2 Region 8-AAA).

Jackson County visits Morgan County at 5:55 p.m. Friday.

Jefferson 11, East Jackson 0

Jamie Sexton was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three RBIs for the Dragons in a six-inning game Tuesday at East Jackson High.

Jake Fields and Jason Demos each went 2-for-3 and Tyler Bailey had three runs scored and two RBIs for Jefferson (8-2, 3-1 Region 8B-AA). Chris Swancey earned the win, pitching four innings and striking out five.

Jefferson plays host to Oglethorpe County at 5:30 p.m. today.

GOLF

Dawson County girls 95, Forsyth Central 104

Charley Whitmire led the Tigers with a 41, followed by Katie Stowers’ 51 on Tuesday at Olde Atlanta Golf Course in Cumming.

Dawson County visits Rabun County at 3:30 p.m. today at Kingswood Golf Course in Clayton.

Dawson County boys 160, Forsyth Central 179

Cody Palmer was the low-medalist for the Tigers with a 38, followed by 39s by Matt Christopher and Justin Denard and a 44 by Nick Fitts on Tuesday at Olde Atlanta Golf Course in Cumming.

Dawson County visits Rabun County at 3:30 p.m. today at Kingswood Golf Course in Clayton.

TENNIS

North Hall girls 4, Pickens 1 (Monday)

Cara Reece and Jessica Butts won in singles for the Lady Trojans, while the team of Rachel Langman and Gay Anne Agnew and the team of Katherine Wessely and Anna Eades swept doubles for North Hall (9-4) on Monday in Jasper.

North Hall visits Creekview at 4 p.m. today.
