High school scoreboard: Gainesville leads region track meet

The Gainesville High track team finished Day 1 of the Region 7-AAA meet in first place with 47 points Monday in Cumming.

Trailing the Red Elephants are Flowery Branch, with 43 points, and West Forsyth, with 37 points.

Paul Malquist finished first in the pole vault for Gainesville with a height of 15 feet. Chris West finished second in the high jump (6-4) and fourth in the triple jump (40-9.5) and Josh Jackson finished third in the shot put (46-1).

All Region 7-AAA track teams complete today in the final day of the region meet at West Forsyth High.

BASEBALL

North Hall 9, Pickens 6

The Trojans scored three runs in the eighth inning to edge Pickens in extra innings Monday in Jasper.

Ryan Pitts was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs for North Hall (14-10, 14-8 Region 7-AAA). Trey Pinson was 2-for-4 with two runs and Graham Duncan added two hits for the Trojans.

Chris Stevens pitched six innings to earn the win for North Hall.

North Hall returns to action when it travels to East Hall to take on the Vikings at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Gainesville 6, White County 5

A four-run sixth inning pushed the Red Elephants past White County on Monday at Ivey-Watson Field in Gainesville.

Everybody in the Red Elephants’ lineup had a hit, led by Andy Edmondson’s home run.

Will Maddox and Ryan Griffith each doubled for Gainesville (15-9, 15-8 Region 7-AAA).

Andy Edmondson pitched 6 2/3 innings without a walk to earn the win for the Red Elephants.

Travis Rutkiewicz was 3-for-4 for White County (13-11, 11-11). Luke Crumley, Adam Hooper and Kyle Mills each added two hits for the Warriors.

Gainesville celebrates senior night and honors its 1949 state championship team when the Red Elephants play host to Creekview at 7 p.m. Friday. White County next visits Lumpkin County at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Lumpkin County 16, Johnson 10

Will Anderson was 5-for-6 with two doubles, six RBIs and three stolen bases to lead the Indians to a win Monday in Oakwood.

Blake Sargent and Donnie Harper each had two hits and two RBIs for Lumpkin County (20-4, 18-4 Region 7-AAA). Drew Uptegraph pitched 4 1/3 innings to earn the win on the mound for the Indians.

Christian Duguay, Nick Denard, Logan Pethel, Fletcher Whiting and Taylor Whitmire each had two hits for Johnson.

Lumpkin County returns to action when it plays host to White County at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Johnson (5-19, 5-17) next visits Flowery Branch at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Flowery Branch 11, Gilmer 1

Everybody in the Falcons’ lineup had at least one hit for a team total of 17 Monday in Ellijay. James Wilson was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for Flowery Branch (18-5, 17-5 Region 7-AAA). Jordan Wilson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Brad Stone, Bucky Free and James Mills each added two hits for the Falcons.

Preston Bostic pitched a complete game to record the win for Flowery Branch.

Flowery Branch next plays host to Johnson at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Clarke Central 5, Habersham Central 4

Johnathan Thomas was 2-for-3 and Jonathon Thurmond was 1-for-2 with a double to lead the Raiders at the plate Monday in Athens.

Chance Armour pitched six innings and gave up one earned run in the loss for Habersham Central (6-16).

Habersham Central wraps up regular season play when it visits Cedar Shoals at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.
