High school scoreboard: Cole leads Gainesville to tourney win

Gainesville High junior Camryn Cole carded an 87 to lead the Lady Red Elephants to a win at the  Spartan Lanier Challenge High School Golf Tournament hosted by West Hall Highon Saturday at Pine Isle Golf Resort.

The field consisted of 10 boys teams and eight girls teams. The field was split in half with teams that represented both the East and West. The top scores were used from each side to determine the overall score.

In the boys’ division both the East and West shot a 307, but when all six players were added together the East defeated the West by four strokes.

Michael Motz of Mt. Pisgah was the low medalist of the day carding a 75. Local athletes that made the all tournament team were Will England of West Hall with a 77 and Justin Cochran of Gainesville, who carded a 78. South Forsyth players Matt Mierzejewski, Marc Edel, and Sean Stanfill carded a 77, 77, and 80 respectively, while North Forsyth’s Jake Edwards made the all tournament team carding an 80.

Aquinas High, which had three players contributing to the East score, carried home the trophy.

In the girls’ division, Cole’s 87 and Brookwood’s Erin Cundiff’s 92 was enough to seal the deal for the East. Hannah Derthick of West Hall made the all tournament team by shooting a 106.

Kandace Cochran of White County also made the all tournament team.

The Lady Red Elephantss beat both Brookwood and Pickens by a stroke to win the event.

The Region 7-AAA teams will be competing in region tournament this week. The boys tournament will be held at Chattahoochee Country Club on Thursday, while the girls will be traveling to Big Canoe on Wednesday.

Local track teams finish in top 5

Gainesville High’s boys  track team placed second and North Hall’s finished fourth out of 18 teams on Saturday at the Sawnee Invitational at West Forsyth.

Blake Sims, who was named most outstanding athlete, won the 100 and 200 meter dash and placed third in the long jump.  Paul Malquist won the pole vault with a height of 15 feet.  Des Hamilton was third in the high jump at six feet.

The 4x100 relay team of Tai-ler Jones, Teryan Rucker, Xavier Ervin and  Sims also placed first and set new school record of 42.88.

Top performers for North Hall were Nolan Clark finishing seconnd in the two mile (9:39) and fourth in the mile (4:31). The 4x800 relay team of Travis McEnaney, Reese, Walker, Ty McCormack, and Brandon Lawson finished second (8:09). Ben Booth was third in the pole vault (12-0). Cody Barger was third in the two mile (9:40). Peyton Wilhoite was fourth in the discus (133-9.5).

The Gainesville girls team competed well with the following athletes scoring points: Jazamine Jones (second in high jump), Shelbee Carter  (fourth in triple jump, eighth in the pole vault and long jump), Sha’Doris Godwin (fourth in the 200 and 400), Jasmine Mays (eighth in discus) and Keela Griffin (seventh in shot put).
