High school scoreboard: Carnes scores 1,000th point in loss

Jaymee Carnes surpassed 1,000 points in her career with 17 points for Class AAA’s No. 3 ranked Gainesville (1-1) in a 45-43 loss to Class AAA’s No. 4 ranked Franklin County on Tuesday night in Carnesville.

Franklin County’s Ashley Harris also hit the 1,000-point milestone with a team-high 22 points for the Lions (4-0).

Gainesville opens the Lanierland tournament on Friday at North Hall.

Chestatee boys 76, Landmark Christian 43

Led by Branden Jovaag’s 18 points and Lamar Brooks’ 11 points, the War Eagles picked up their second straight win on Tuesday in Gainesville.

Brantley Beck and Jackson Chandler also had double figures for Chestatee (3-1), each with 10 points.

Chestatee opens the Lanierland tournament on Friday at North Hall.

North Oconee girls 48, Chestatee 47

North Oconee’s Morgan Thomas hit a half-court buzzer beater to defeat the Lady War Eagles on Tuesday in Bogart.

Peyton Robertson led Chestatee (1-3) with 12 points. Melissa Bailey and Chelsea Wilson each added nine points for the War Eagles.

Chestatee opens the Lanierland tournament on Friday at North Hall.

Buford girls 60, Flowery Branch 37

Blanche Alverson scored 12 points and Shanee Carson added 11 points for the Lady Wolves (1-0) in their season opener on Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

Clare Tyler led Flowery Branch (0-1) with nine points.

Buford faces Marist at 1:40 p.m. Saturday at Wesleyan in Norcross. Flowery Branch opens the Lanierland tournament on Friday at North Hall.

Flowery Branch boys 70, Buford 29

Ishmael Hollis scored 17 points in the Falcons’ season opener on Tuesday in Flowery Branch.

Kyle Smith and Brian Whelchel also had double figures for Flowery Branch (1-0), each scoring 12.

Flowery Branch will participate in the Lanierland Tournament on Friday. Buford (0-1) visits Avondale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Johnson boys 80, Jackson 40

The Knights outscored Jackson County 22-6 in the first quarter and rolled its second win of the season on Tuesday.

Chris Henry led Johnson (2-2) with 19 points. Devaris Finch added 15 and Jim Orr earned a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks for the Knights.

Johnson opens play in the Lanierland tournament on Friday at North Hall. Jackson County visits Banks County at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jackson County girls 49, Johnson 27

Ashley Skelton led the unbeaten Lady Panthers to its fourth straight win with 17 points on Tuesday in Oakwood.

Breanna Drew also hit double figures for Jackson County (4-0) with 10 points.

Jackson County visits Banks County at 4 p.m. Saturday. Johnson (0-2) opens play in the Lanierland tournament on Friday at North Hall.

Athens Academy boys 61, Riverside Military 49

Richard Tribble scored 12 points while Dylen Setzekorn and John Ogunniya also hit double figures with 10 points each on Tuesday in Athens.

Riverside (1-2) plays host to East Jackson at 6:30 p.m.

White County boys 52, Union County 36

Tyler Dotson led the Warriors with a 17-point performance while Luke Crumley scored 15 points and Ashely Lowery added 10 points on Tuesday in Blairsville.

White County (1-2) plays host to West Forsyth at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

WRESTLING

Gainesville grapplers pick up first win


The Red Elephants earned their first team win of the season, defeating East Hall 42-29 on Tuesday.

Bumping all its wrestlers up a weight class, Gainesville had seven victories on the night, including pins by Graham Simmons (189 pounds), Austin Hendrix (119), Michael Waters (215), John Webster (160), Dane Hicks (135), Edgar Acosta (145) and Trahern Ricks (171).

East Hall winners included Ariel Negron (130), Juan Cruz (140) and Elijah Buffington (152).

Gainesville will participate in the Panther Tournament at 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at Jackson County. East Hall will participate in the Flowery Branch Invitational at 8 a.m. Saturday.
