High school scoreboard: Buford girls win Deep South Classic title
Lumpkin County's Brown scores 31 against West Forsyth

The Buford High girls basketball team won the Deep South Classic championship with a 55-25 win against Peachtree Ridge on Tuesday night at Brookwood High in Snellville.

Andraya Carter led the Lady Wolves (7-1) with 12 points. Blanche Alverson and Jocelyn Danley each had nine points for Buford.

The Lady Wolves outscored Peachtree Ridge 21-8 in the third period, and then 16-3 in the fourth quarter.

Jefferson boys 57, Apalachee 56

Down by two points with less than five seconds remaining in the game, Jefferson’s Darius Minor heaved a 70-foot shot that went in and gave the Dragons a win in the finals of the Oconee County Christmas Tournament in Athens.

Minor, who was named tournament MVP, scored 24 points for the Dragons, whose only lead came as time expired.

J.J. Damons added 15 points for Jefferson (7-2), which was trailing by 15 points with five minutes to play.
Jefferson plays host to Fannin County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

West Forsyth girls 55, Lumpkin County 53

Lumpkin County senior Ashley Brown had 31 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and two assists in the Forsyth Central Tournament in Cumming. Cara Malone had 11 points and five steals for the Lady Indians.

Kelsie Smith, a junior, had seven points and eight rebounds for Lumpkin County.

West Forsyth boys 52, Lumpkin County 44

E.J. Young scored 15 and Shawn Chapman added 11 for the Lumpkin County boys basketball team in a loss to West Forsyth in the Forsyth Central Tournament on Tuesday in Cumming. West Forsyth pulled away for the win by outscoring Lumpkin County 20-7 in the fourth quarter.

John Benedict (13) and Chris Drees (12) led the Wolverines in scoring.

Lumpkin County visits Pickens at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Jasper.

East Hall 45, Alpharetta 36

Haley Chapman led the Lady Vikings (6-5) with 11 points on Tuesday in the North Gwinnett Powerade Classic in Suwanee. East Hall pulled to an early lead by outscoring Alpharetta 15-6 in the first quarter. Symone Hampton added eight points for the Lady Vikings.

On Monday, East Hall defeated Gilmer 55-51 behind Jasmine Jenkins’ 19 points and Hampton’s 14.

East Hall plays host to Centennial at 6 p.m. on Jan. 10 at Valhalla.

Gulliver Prep boys 66, Lakeview Academy 42

Haughton Carswell scored seven points and Brett Armour added six in the championship game of the KSA Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.

Gulliver Prep (Fla.) built a 27-17 lead going into halftime, and extended its lead to 49-26 after the third quarter.

Lakeview Academy (5-6) visits Prince Avenue Christian at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Pebblebrook boys 57, Flowery Branch 44

Brian Welchel scored 10 points and Josh Barrett added nine in the Falcons’ loss to Pebblebrook on

Tuesday at the Campbell Holiday Classic in Smyrna.

Ishmael Hollis, who scored seven points against Pebblebrook, was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Flowery Branch (4-3) plays Lee (Ala.) at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Kennesaw State.

Wrestling

West Hall splits with Osborne, West Forsyth

Justin Byrne, Ricardo Macilla, Chris Price, Lee Smee and Collins Wright had pins for the Spartans in a 78-6 win against Osborne on Tuesday at West Forsyth. Diego Rivero had the only pin for West Hall in a 45-25 loss to West Forsyth.

West Hall wrestles in the Hall County Championships starting on Friday at East Hall.
