The North Hall High boys and Flowery Branch girls cross country teams each won the championship in the Northeast Georgia Championships on Saturday at Athens Christian.
In the girls championship race, Flowery Branch won by just one point over Winder-Barrow. The Lady Falcons were led by junior Megan Kirk (20 minutes, 56.73 seconds) in sixth and Kayla Robles (21:07.90) seventh.
For North Hall's boys, senior Brandon Lawson (16:14.91) finished second, Witt Nix (16:59.26) finished third, Tucker LoCicero (17:02.34) finished fifth and Luis Gonzalez (17:10.89) finished sixth.
The Falcons finished second in the boys championship race. Sophomore Taylor Fiorello (17:01.67) finished fourth, Drew Garland (17:11.23) finished seventh and Luis Teran (17:24.83) finished 10th.
Dawson County senior Madalyn Walters finished first overall in a time of 19:41.38, and North Hall junior Victoria Rogers (21:16.04) finished ninth to lead the Lady Trojans.
The Chestatee High boys varsity finished ninth overall in the varsity run. Twenty-eight teams were featured in this event. Jeremy Gross led for the War Eagles squad and was 26th out of 230 runners with a time of 18:45.7.
The Lady War Eagles finished seventh out of 22 teams. Sarah Beth English led the way with a sixth place finish out of 185 runners. The sophomore ran the 5K in 21:16.82.
The Flowery Branch boys junior varsity team finished third overall in the varsity race.
Volleyball
LADY TROJANS TAKE DOWN NORTH FORSYTH: North Hall High volleyball won their first two matches in the North Forsyth challenge at North Forsyth High Friday night, defeating Cherokee 20-25, 34-32, 28-26 and North Murray 25-5, 25-20.
Kristina Gregory led the way with 24 assists and six kills, Sarah Paschall recorded 17 digs, McKenna Rushton had nine kills, six digs and one block, Marykate Rushton finished with 10 kills, three blocks and four digs, and Allie Staub had 18 digs.
The Lady Trojans split a pair of game Thursday night at West Forsyth, beating Berkmar 25-10, 25-19 and falling to the hosts 22-25, 22-25. McKenna Rushton paced North Hall with five kills, eight aces, two blocks and five digs.
NORTH GEORGIA CHRISTIAN OPENS WITH SWEEP: The North Georgia Christian Lady Chargers volleyball squad started their 2011 season with a three-game sweep of the visiting Lady Lions from Unity Christian School in Rome. The Lady Chargers (1-0) won 25-13, 25-8, and 25-10.
