Bush leads Buford softball to tournament win

Buford sophomore Bria Bush led the Class AA defending state champion Lady Wolves to three wins Saturday and a top finish in the Wesleyan bracket of the Georgia Dugout Club Leadoff Classic at Wesleyan in Norcross.

Bush, who was named to the All-Tournament Team for her play in the pitcher’s circle and at the plate, finished the tournament with a 0.64 ERA and went 5 for 11 on the mound with three RBIs.

Bush (3-0) pitched a five-inning, complete game with three strikeouts and two hits allowed against Loganville to earn a 5-1 win in the opener Saturday. Buford’s Drew Puckett finished 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, Jazmin Hawkins went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Niki Cook went 1 for 2, scored a run and stole two bases.

The Lady Wolves (6-0) defeated First Presbyterian Day 6-3 in the second game of the day, with Emily Crocker (1-0) pitching two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.

Freshman Sydney Stavro hit a bases clearing triple in the fifth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie in the final frame.

Cook finished 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, Hawkins was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and a stolen base and the Lady Wolves’ Remington Hasty drove in two runs.

Cook came up big again in the final game as well to help lead Buford to a 6-4 win over Northview and a tournament sweep, finishing 3 for 3 with three runs scored and four stolen bases.

Bekah Rude pitched two innings, allowed three hits and struck out two to earn the win for Buford, and freshman Kennedy Kotula earned the save with two innings in relief.

The Lady Wolves play their home opener at 5:55 Monday against Jefferson in Buford.


Katie White recorded 32 kills, 14 digs, five aces and two blocks to lead Lakeview Academy to three wins in four matches Saturday at Lakeview.

The Lady Lions (5-5) defeated Providence Christian 25-19, 25-18, Athens Christian 25-23, 25 18, Tallulah Falls 25-11, 28-30, 15-9, and lost to Hebron Christian 19-25, 13-25

Shelby Ross added 15 kills, six aces and six blocks, Bailey Towles had 30 assists, 14 digs and 10 aces, Delaney Jarrett added 24 assists and Samantha Versteeg had 17 digs.

Lakeview returns to the court Saturday at Jefferson.
