The North Hall boys track team had five members qualify for the state meet in seven total events en route to scoring 108 points and winning the Region 8-AAA team championship on Monday at Lanier High in Sugar Hill.
Cody Barger led the way for the Trojans with first place finishes in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races, while Brandon Lawson added second place finishes in both the 800 and 1,600-meter. Also placing second for North Hall was Ben Satterfield in the 200-meter, Drew Bryant in the discus and Patrick Chappell in the shot put.
Gainesville (57 points) finished in fourth place, with two second place finishes from Troy McKeithen (110-meter hurdles and triple jump), and one from Desmond Hamilton in the long jump.
West Hall’s Jason McCurdy (second place, 400-meter) and Josh Pendley (second place, 3,200-meter) qualified for the state meet, as did Johnson’s Kyle Stacey (first place, shot put), Chestatee’s Tyler Armour (first place, pole vault), and Lumpkin County’s Taylor Guthrie (first place, triple jump.)
The all-classification state track meet will be held May 5-7 at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.
Baseball
LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 12, TOWNS COUNTY 0 (FIVE INNINGS): Taylor Simpson (3-4) threw a complete game, striking out nine, while going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI at the plate for the Lions on Tuesday in Hiawassee. Derek Fadool (2-for-2) drove in three runs, while Spencer Sorrells (2-for-3) drove in two for Lakeview (14-11, 12-8 Region 8-A). The Lions, who need a win to earn a spot in the state playoffs, host Tallulah Falls at 4:30 p.m. today in their last regular season game.
WEST HALL 7, LUMPKIN COUNTY 4: Chandler Newton pitched a complete game to earn the win and added two hits at the plate for the Spartans (7-18, 5-18 Region 8-AAA) on Tuesday in Oakwood. T.J. Williams connected on a three-run home run for West Hall in the third inning.
Jake Shirley added two runs and two hits for West Hall, which visits Walnut Grove for its season finale at 5:55 p.m. on Friday in Loganville.
For Lumpkin County, Will Anderson had a two-run home run in the fifth inning, followed by a solo home run in the seventh.
The Indians play host to White County at 5:55 today in Dahlonega.
