East Hall soccer makes history in 1-0 win

With less than five seconds left in the game, Saul Lopez scored for East Hall off of a pass from Jason Mendoza to secure a 1-0 win against East Jackson on Friday night to advance to the program’s first-ever region championship game. The win also allows East Hall to host their first-ever home state playoff game.

East Hall hosts North Oconee at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for the Region 8-AA Championship.

WEST HALL GIRLS 5, WHITE COUNTY 0: Katie Forrester, Shannon Mundy, Yohet Terrones, Monica Suarez and Jessica Dambach each scored for the Lady Spartans (11-5, 9-2 Region 8-AAA South) on Friday night. Rachel Kline added two assists for West Hall, and Alex Smith earned the shutout in goal.

The Lady Spartans host Chestatee at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

WEST HALL BOYS 8, WHITE COUNTY 1: Matt Lewis scored four goals and had two assists for the Spartans (10-6-1, 7-4 Region 8-AAA South) on Friday night in Oakwood. Edgar Jaimes added two goals for West Hall, Edwin Mendieta and Alejandro Zamora each scored one goal.

The Spartans host Chestatee at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 4, WALNUT GROVE 0: Hartley Carter scored three goals for the Lady Red Elephants (13-3-1, 11-1 Region 8-AAA South) and Elizabeth Fischer added one on Friday night in Loganville to clinch the Region 8-AAA South title. Rebecca Webster earned the shutout for Gainesville with six saves in goal.

The Lady Red Elephants visit Habersham Central at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 1, WALNUT GROVE 0: Eduardo Espinoza scored the lone goal for the Red Elephants (15-1, 12-0 Region 8-AAA South) on Friday night in Loganville. Edgar Espinoza and Juan Remes combined for the shutout in goal for Gainesville.

The Red Elephants visit Habersham Central at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LANIER GIRLS 3, CHESTATEE 1: Alexis Rebollar scored for the Lady War Eagles off of an assist from Melanie Smith on Friday night in Gainesville.

Chestatee visits West Hall on Tuesday.

CHESTATEE BOYS 3, LANIER 0: Marco Rebollar, Roldan Reyes and John Hatch each scored for the War Eagles (10-6-1, 10-1 Region 8-AAA North) on Friday night to clinch the No. 2 seed in Region 8-AAA North. Michael Herrin earned the shutout with five saves in goal for Chestatee.

The War Eagles visit West Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

JOHNSON BOYS 7, MONROE-AREA 1: Israel Azuara led the Knights (12-2-2, 9-2 Region 8-AAA South) with two goals on Friday night in Oakwood to clinch a spot in the playoffs. Edgar Ochoa, Manuel Aguilar, Caleb Fitzpatrick, Seth Rebollar and Josue Estrada each added a goal for Johnson. Joshua Martin recorded five saves in goal for the Knights.

Johnson visits Walnut Grove on Monday.

FLOWERY BRANCH GIRLS WIN REGION 8-AAAA CHAMPIONSHIP: No. 1 doubles duo Durden Smith and Bekki Benton recorded wins for the Lady Falcons (20-1, 13-0 Region 8-AAAA) in a 3-1 semifinal win against Rockdale County and a 3-1 final win against Heritage on Friday afternoon to win the Region 8-AAAA Championship. No. 2 singles player Elizabeth Mallory also recorded wins in both matches for Flowery Branch.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS FINISH THIRD: No. 2 doubles duo Isaac Black and Nathan Sengkhammee recorded the only win for the Falcons in a 3-1 loss to Rockdale County. Flowery Branch defeated Winder 3-0 in the seeding round to take third place in Region 8-AAAA.

LAKEVIEW BOYS DEFEAT WILKINSON COUNTY: With the win, the Lions will enter the state tournament draw to play Whitefield Academy on Tuesday at a time to be determined.

Lacrosse

RIVERSIDE MILITARY ACADEMY 10, GAINESVILLE 3 (THURSDAY): Noah Kennedy, Kevin Wood Daniel West, Wells Stecker, Jordan Peebles each scored goals for the Eagles to take an early 6-2 lead going into halftime on Thursday night. Nicolas Gasparro blocked over 10 shots in goal for Riverside.

The Eagles host Greater Atlanta Christian at 5 p.m. Monday.

Track

REGION 8-AAAA RESULTS: The Flowery Branch girls tied with Loganville for third place with 78 points, and the boys finished in seventh place overall.

Austin Eckenroth captured first place (16-8) and Kaylie Tanner finished second in the pole vault (7-feet) for the Falcons. Alex Miller won the region title (5-2) and Tavia Sykes finished fourth in the high jump (4-10), and Katherine Randolph was the region runner-up in the long jump (17-7). Dayzjah Loving got third in the 400 meter (1:01.07), Katherine Randolph finished fourth in 100 Hurdles (17.13), Brittney Wells finished third in the 800 (2:25.60), Ellie Tanner got fourth in the 800 (2:27.63), Cassie Ward finished third in the 3200 (12:06.05), Drew Garland finished first in 1600 (4:31.60) and 3200 (9:51.95), and Taylor Fiorello finished fourth in the 3200 (10:15.04).

Austin Eckenroth’s vault of 16-feet, 8-inches for Flowery Branch placed him fourth all-time for the state of Georgia, and he is currently tied for third for the best vaulter in the country for high schools.

Baseball

GAINESVILLE 10, LUMPKIN COUNTY 0: David Gonzalez had his 200th career strikeout for the Red Elephants (22-0, 17-0 Region 8-AAA South) while pitching a complete-game five innings, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts on Friday night. Michael Gettys had a three-run home run for Gainesville, Steven Mason had two hits and one RBI, and Hunter Anglin and Gonzalez each had two hits and two RBIs.

The Red Elephants visit Monroe Area at 5:55 p.m. Monday.

NORTH HALL 14, WEST HALL 0: Wade Phillips pitched a complete-game five innings for the Trojans (15-7, 12-4 Region 8-AAA North), allowing only one hit with six strikeouts on Friday night in Gainesville. Andrew Smith went 3 for 3 for North Hall with two RBIs, and Adam Kelly went 2 for 3 with a three-run home run and two stolen bases.

The Trojans visit Franklin County at 5:55 p.m. Monday.

JACKSON COUNTY SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER: Jalen Banks led the Panthers (13-8, 8-6 Region 8-AA South) in game one, throwing a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and hitting a double at the plate in a 3-0 win against East Hall on Friday night. Andy Williams went 3 for 4 with a double for Jackson County.

Nick Corso went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Panthers in game two, and Andy Williams had a three-run triple in the 16-5 win against the Vikings. Andrew Fogarty went 2 for 2 with two RBIs for Jackson County, Ben Brissey went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, and Quinn Grogan earned the win.

The Panthers visit Dawson County at 5:55 p.m. Tuesday.

JEFFERSON 10, BANKS COUNTY 2: Tyler Cole went 3 for 3 with two doubles and one RBI for the Dragons (13-9, 9-6 Region 8-AA South), and Andy Nicholas went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs on Friday night in Homer. The win clinched a state playoff spot for Jefferson.

Jefferson visits North Oconee at 5 p.m. Monday for a doubleheader.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 10, SOCIAL CIRCLE 6: Dakotah Chalmers came on in relief to earn the win for the Lions (12-12), allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts on Friday night in Social Circle. Derek Fadool went 2 for 3 with three runs scored for Lakeview, Chalmers had a single and a double, and Dallas Deavers went 1 for 2 with one RBI.

The Lions host George Walton at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
