Johnson boys win Region 8-AAA soccer title

The Johnson High boys soccer team carried over a 1-0 lead from Friday's suspended Region 8-AAA championship game, got a goal early from Ariel Mejia and fended off a tough Gainesville squad to earn a 2-1 win for the region title on Saturday at City Park.

"Our team showed more heart and desire than I've ever seen," Knights coach Brian Shirley said. "I'm so proud of our effort."

Mejia scored for Johnson (14-2, 11-1 Region 8-AAA) with seven minutes remaining in the first half. On Friday, Edgar Ochoa scored for the Knights before play was suspended due to poor weather.

According to Shirley, the Red Elephants continued to attack and played extremely well the entire game. Douglas Mejia scored for Gainesville on a penalty kick with 4:49 left to play.

Baseball
ROCKDALE COUNTY 4, FLOWERY BRANCH 3:
Breck Davidson had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Falcons (14-4, 10-3 Region 8-AAAA) on Saturday in Conyers.

Jesse Brookshire added a pair of hits for Flowery Branch and an RBI.

Flowery Branch visits Winder-Barrow at 6 p.m. on Monday.
