Jacob Evans hit a 3-pointer as time expired to keep the Dawson County boys basketball team unbeaten with a 53-52 win against Region 8-AA foe Walnut Grove on Saturday at Walnut Grove.

The Tigers (7-0, 2-0 Region 8-AA) used a 21-8 run in the fourth quarter to put themselves in a position to win it on a last-second shot. Dawson County’s Stephen Scaife led all scorers with 23 points. Evans had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Tigers.

Dawson County returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Banks County.

WALNUT GROVE GIRLS 70, DAWSON COUNTY 52: Down by only three at the start of the final period, the Lady Tigers were outscored 23-8 by Walnut Grove en route to a loss Saturday at Walnut Grove.

Carly Gilreath led Dawson County with 13 points and Judith Hall added 10.

Walnut Grove shot 61 free throws — 31 of its 70 points — to the Lady Tigers 19 in the game hitting 15 of 26 from the line in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Tigers return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Banks County.

JACKSON COUNTY BOYS 65, EAST JACKSON 46 (FRIDAY NIGHT): Joseph Smith had 15 points to lead the Panthers in their win at East Jackson on Friday night.

Juice Harrison had 12 points and 20 rebounds for Jackson County.

Jackson County plays host to Eastside on Tuesday.

DAWSON COUNTY GIRLS 50, GILMER 47 (FRIDAY NIGHT): Freshman Allie Costley had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers in their first loss of the season Friday night.

Judith Hall contributed nine points in the loss and Kenna Seitz had nine rebounds.

WRESTLING

EAST HALL DUALS WAY TO TWO WINS: The East Hall High wrestling team competed at the North Oconee Duals on Saturday.

East Hall had dual victories over Grovetown 64-15 and Social Circle 54-18, but lost to Westside 42-42 (on criteria), Athens Christian 31-37, and North Oconee 24-48.

Individual winners for the Vikings were Allen Shockley, Justin Cofield, Patricio Cruz, Chistopher Ingram, Luis Melendez, Ariel Negron, Carlos Negron, Kerry Mata, Elijah Buffington, Cristian Vergara, Seth Trusty, Dustin Rodgers and Chrisel Flores.

East Hall returns to action at 5 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to Winder-Barrow.

WEST HALL FINISHES THIRD AT TOURNEY: The West Hall wrestling team finished third at the Duluth Tournament on Saturday beating St. Francis (63-13), Alcovy (34-23), Forest Park (70-12) and Mountain View (52-23).

The Spartan wrestlers who earned pins were Omar Lopez (2), Trey Smith (1), Tanner Yates (2), Justin Byrne (2), Logan Herford (3), Andrew Johnson (2), Ricardo Marcweiz (3), Elijah Markeski (2), Chris Price (4) and Julio Chavez (1).

West Hall’s next match is at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Chestatee at West Hall.
