High school basketball: Gainesville boys fall in first round of 6A state playoffs
Gainesville
Gainesville's Walt Dixon looks to shoot against Sequoyah in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs Friday.

The Gainesville boys basketball held a brief second-half lead Friday night against Sequoyah in the first round of the Class 6A state tournament, but could hold on late, falling 63-53 to the visiting Chiefs.

The Red Elephants led by a point after the first quarter, but faltered in the second, falling into a 4-point hole at halftime.

Walt Dixon scored 6 quick points to put Gainesville on top early in the third, but Sequoyah responded with an 8-0 run of its own that put the Chiefs in front for good.

Sequoyah led by 4 points going into the fourth, and got it up to a 10-point lead halfway through the final frame.

Datavian Buffington and Robert Reisman each completed traditional 3-point plays down the stretch to give the Red Elephants some life, but it was not enough to ever truly threaten the Sequoyah lead.

With the loss, Gainesville’s season officially comes to a close.
