Jonathan Gettys recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed just a pair of hits for Gainesville in a 6-2 win against Greenbrier to open the Class AAAAA state championship series in Evans. Game 2 will begin at 6 p.m. Gettys retired the side on strikeouts in the first two innings, and didn't allow a runner on base until Wolfpack center fielder Justin Hartfield reached on a walk with two outs in the third inning. Leading 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gettys allowed a run with a bases-loaded walk to Adam Sasser and RBI single to right field by Garrett Marchmen.
