EVANS — Gainesville's bid for a baseball state championship is quickly evolving into a never-ending series.

After a split of Monday's doubleheader against top-ranked Greenbrier in the best-of-three series, Game 3 was scheduled for Tuesday. Heavy rain made that impossible.

Now, Game 3 of the Class AAAAA championship series is scheduled for noon Wednesday in Evans.

"It's frustrating to have it cancelled, but we had a talk with the players after they called it today," said Gainesville coach Jeremy Kemp. "I think they're handling it well."

"We're just going to get out there and play the first time we get dry weather."

The weather forecast for Wednesday in the Augusta area isn't particularly promising, calling for an 50 percent chance of rain Wednesday afternoon, according to The Weather channel.

Still, the extra day isn't exactly bad news for the fifth-ranked Red Elephants (29-7). With an extra day, Kemp acknowledged that it makes using left-handed ace Jonathan Gettys, who picked up the Game 1 victory Monday, a more realistic possibility. The Red Elephants starting pitcher pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts to earn a 6-2 victory in the opening game.

Senior right-hander Caleb Whitenton, who threw four innings to start Game 2, will also be fresh, even through he's been battling arm pain.

"The extra day definitely helps our staff," said Kemp.

Greenbrier will also be likely to throw one of its two starters from Monday: Southern Mississippi signee Nick Sandlin, a right-hander, and Adam Sasser, a left-hander who is signed with Georgia.

For Greenbrier, Sasser threw a complete game with nine strikeouts for a 7-3 win in the second game.
