Gainesville High volleyball team earns trip to state tournament

Gainesville volleyball dropped two matches in the area tournament on Saturday and qualified for the Class AAAAAA State Tournament after earning the third seed for Area 8-AAAAAA.

The Lady Red Elephants dropped its first match to Habersham Central (26-24, 18-25, 22-25) in the winner’s bracket. Then, Gainesville fell to eventual champion Winder-Barrow (23-25, 25-11, 21-25).

Sydney King had 54 digs, five assists and two aces for Gainesville on the day. Savannah Roys had 24 digs, nine kills, eight aces and three blocks, while Olivia Gettys added 18 kills, seven digs and three blocks for the Lady Red Elephants.

Habersham Central lost to Winder-Barrow in a 5-set championship match and will host its first-round matchup of the state tournament on Thursday.

Gainesville will travel to Brunswick to face Glynn Academy, the Area 2-AAAAAA No. 2 seed.


Gainesville High golfer Ryan Hogan is one shot behind leaders John Baker of Cumming and Eli Scott of Hartwell after the first round of the Georgia PGA’s Chattahoochee Junior Classic, which is being hosted at Chattahoochee Golf Course in Gainesville. Hogan opened with a 74.

Fellow Red Elephants Brody Simmons and Davis Weaver are five strokes back with rounds of 78. Hunter Worley shot an 82.

The tournament is a 36-hole event and will conclude today.
