Chestatee, Lumpkin County win matches at state wrestling meet

MACON — The Chestatee and Lumpkin County wrestling teams both earned victories on the first day of the GHSA Class AAAA Team Dual Wrestling Championships on Thursday in Macon, while Flowery Branch lost its match in Class AAAAA.

Chestatee defeated Locust Grove 49-26 and will face Marist today in the winner’s bracket. The winner will face either Gilmer County or Glenn Hills, while the loser will fall to the consolation bracket. Lumpkin County defeated Upson Lee 46-30 on Thursday and will face Alexander today.

The winner will face West Laurens or Cass this afternoon in the winner’s bracket, while the loser will fall to the consolation bracket to face either Fayette County or Perry, both of whom lost on Thursday.

Flowery Branch fell in its match to Effingham County, 42-27, on Thursday. The Falcons will now wrestle out of the consolation bracket, where they will face Lee County. The winner will face either Warner Robins or Dunwoody, while the loser will be eliminated from the state tournament.

Reigning Class AA state champion Jefferson, defending Class AAA champion Banks County and Buford will all wrestle this morning. The smallest three classifications in the GHSA did not wrestle on Thursday.
