Buford's Burnette drafted by Pirates

It's no coincidence that on one of the biggest days of his career, Jake Burnette was playing a double-header.

In a few months, he might be getting paid to do the same thing.

Burnette, a recent Buford High graduate, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first pick in the seventh round (No. 212 overall) of Tuesday's MLB draft, and he now must decide whether to sign a contract or keep his commitment to Georgia Tech.

"It's crazy, I don't even know what to think," Burnette said about getting drafted.

"Everybody dreams of this when they start playing T-ball."

Whether to make that dream come true or don the Georgia Tech jersey is the only issue to handle now.

"There will be a process for sure," said Buford coach Tony Wolfe, who sent a congratulatory text message to Burnette shortly after hearing he was drafted. "Jake and his family will have to decide what is best."

Wolfe said he'd offer up a suggestion if needed, but the Burnettes have plenty of experience in this process since Jake's older brother Chase was drafted last year in the 19th round by the Cleveland Indians.

"I know Jake would really like to go to Georgia Tech," he added. "But it's every kid's dream to play in the Major Leagues."

Burnette, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, finished 8-0 with a 1.75 ERA to help lead the Wolves to their first state championship since 1977. He is the first Buford player to get drafted out of high school since pitcher Justin Curry was selected in the 33rd round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2006.

North Georgia College & State University catcher Troy Snitker was also drafted Tuesday. Snitker, who became the highest draft pick in the history of the program, was selected in the 19th round with the 596th overall pick by the Atlanta Braves.

"We couldn't be happier for Troy and his family," head coach Tom Cantrell said Tuesday evening following the selection. "It has been a pleasure to have Troy as member of the North Georgia baseball program over the last two years and we wish him well with the Atlanta Braves"

Snitker is the third selection in the last two years for Cantrell and the Saints.

A second-team Peach Belt All-Conference performer in 2011, Snitker had a .340 batting average with 44 RBIs and a team-high six home runs.

Defensively, Snitker established himself as one of the most feared arms at the NCAA Division II level in 2011, throwing out 25 base stealers and picking off 11 more. He had a .986 fielding percentage as he played and started in all 54 games for the Saints.

Snitker is the seventh player taken in the Major League Baseball Draft from North Georgia, as the program has had players drafted in 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, and now in 2011. The Saints have sent three players to the MLB Draft in the last two years after Daniel Petitti (Oakland Athletics) and Chris Rearick (Tampa Rays) were taken during the 2010 draft.
