Basketball: Lady Wolves dominate All-State team

Six area players and one coach were selected to Georgia Sports Writers Association All-State team released today.

Class AA’s state champion Buford girls basketball team earned the most awards, led by Blanche Alverson, who was named Class AA Girls Player of the Year and All-state first team.

She was joined by Lady Wolves head coach Gene Durden, who was named Class AA Girls Coach of the Year, first-team selection Andraya Carter and honorable mention Jocelyn Danley.

Other area girls selections were Gainesville’s Jaymee Carnes, who is a second-team in Class AAA, and West Hall’s Jayla Moon, who is an honorable mentions.

Leading the area boys is Gainesvile’s George Manomano, who was selected to Class AAA’s second team.

South Atlanta High senior Derrick Favors was named Mr. Georgia Basketball, while Wesleyan senior Anne-Marie Armstrong was named Miss Georgia Basketball for the second straight year.

Both players will continue their playing careers in Georgia with Favors playing at Georgia Tech and Armstrong at Georgia.
