For Lexi Overstreet, there is very little about the game of softball that does not come naturally.
Overstreet showcased her natural talent last weekend in the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational in Hoschton where she batted .688, hit three home runs, had five doubles and 11 RBIs. For her performance, she has been selected as The Times Athlete of the Week.
On the season, she leads Buford with a .538 batting average and 14 RBIs through the first eight games.
From the time she picked up a bat at age four to imitate her father's left-handed swing, to now as she starts for the Lady Wolves and the East Cobb Bullets, a high-level club team, softball has come easy to Overstreet.
"She has as great of feel as any hitter in the state of Georgia," Buford coach Tony Wolfe said.
After trying numerous other sports, including basketball, which her older sister and mother played, Overstreet decided softball was right for her after seeing Team USA and the College World Series on television as a child.
It is hard to argue with her choice.
Overstreet has been named to All-State, All-County, and All-Region teams each of the past three seasons for her outstanding play. In addition to her individual success, Overstreet has three state championship rings, her club team won the national championship, and she has committed to play for the 2011 SEC Champions at the University of Tennessee.
As a Lady Vol, she will primarily play at third base, but for now, Overstreet does not have one set position on the field. Wolfe said he can put her anywhere on the field and she succeeds because of her "unbelievable dedication" and understanding of the game.
Overstreet is quick to credit her family for her success, especially her oldest brother Damion Overstreet, a former college baseball player at Southern Polytechnic.
"He is someone I want to live up to," Overstreet said. "He is always picks me up after tough games and gives me encouragement and tips when he can make it to the games."
As one of eight seniors on the Buford softball squad this year, Overstreet has been called to take on more of a leadership role, but she is still having fun with the game she loves.
