Area roundup: Lady Lions rally for OT win over Social Circle

The Lakeview Academy girls basketball team rebounded from a fourth quarter deficit to defeat Social Circle 65-63 in overtime Friday night in Gainesville.

Lions guard Janelle Francis hit a 3-pointer to knot the game at 55 late in the fourth quarter. Francis finished the game with eight points.

The Lady Lions took control early in overtime and staved off the Lady Redskins. Junior Brittany Moore led Lakeview (2-5, 2-0 Region 8N-A) with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Louisa Jacobs added 11 points and Maddie Haymore finished with 10.

Lakeview visits Athens Academy at 6 p.m. today.

West Hall girls 46, Chestatee 43
The Lady Spartans pulled their overall record back to .500 on Friday night with a home win over Chestatee in Region 7-AAA action.

Led by Jayla Moon’s 16-point effort, West Hall (6-6, 3-2) possessed a seven-point lead at the end of each of the first three periods and held off the Lady War Eagles in the fourth.

Kim Smigelsky added 13 points for the Lady Spartans, while Chestatee (5-8, 1-5) was led by Kasey Smith and Peyton Robertson with 12 points each.

West Hall returns to the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday when it plays host to Flowery Branch, while Lady War Eagles will travel to take on Landmark Christian at 5 p.m. today.

Buford girls 54, Creekview 21
The third-ranked Lady Wolves dominated from the outset Friday night, breezing to a 23-point halftime lead and expanding on it through the final two quarters against the hosts from Creekview.

Buford (10-1, 5-0 Region 6-AA), led 19-7 after one quarter and 35-12 at halftime as the Lady Grizzlies (4-8, 1-5) failed to record double digits in a single quarter.

Blanche Alverson and Jocelyn Danley led the way for Buford, each scoring 13 points as the Lady Wolves won their ninth consecutive game.

Buford returns to action at 6 tonight when they travel to take on North Hall (No. 9 in Class AAA) in non-region play.

Flowery Branch 62, Lumpkin County 47
Senior forward Jessica Hart scored 16 points as the Lady Falcons held a lead in all four quarters Friday night in Flowery Branch. Kayla Smith added 13 points for the Lady Falcons (5-5).

Flowery Branch plays host to White County at 7 tonight.

Jackson County girls 55, Winder-Barrow 44
Freshman guard Ashley Skelton and freshman forward Brianna Drew combined for 27 points Friday night in Jefferson.

Alyssa Esco added 11 points for the Lady Panthers (8-5, 2-0 Region 8N-AAAA).

Jackson County visits Dacula at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Flowery Branch boys 79, Lumpkin County 47
Falcons guard Josh Barrett led Flowery Branch with 13 points, five assists and four steals Friday night in Flowery Branch.

The Falcons, who outrebounded Lumpkin County 45-20, got 10 boards from junior forward Izaan Cross.

E.J. Young led Lumpkin County with 21 points.

Flowery Branch plays host to White County at 5:30 p.m. today.

Chestatee boys 71, West Hall 54
Parker Smith led Chestatee with 34 points Friday night in Oakwood, while junior point guard Brandon Smith added 13 points and seven assists.

West Hall’s Ricky Vitale had a team-high 18 points.

Chestatee (11-3) visits Landmark Christian at 6:30 tonight.

Social Circle boys 55, Lakeview Academy 53
Seniors David Pruett and Tyler Ward each scored 12 points for the Lions in a losing effort Friday night in Gainesville.

The Lions held a 25-22 lead at the intermission, but couldn’t hold the lead in the second half. Social Circle’s Jonah Street led all scorers with 16 points.

Lakeview visits Athens Academy at 7:30 tonight.
