Area roundup: Lady Knights get first win

OAKWOOD — The streak is over.

After losing nine in a row, the Johnson girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 53-44 overtime victory over Chestatee on Friday night.

Jordan Gustavel led the way for the Lady Knights (1-9, 1-3 Region 7-AAA) with 20 points, including 4-of-4 shooting from the 3-point line, followed by Haley Chapman with 17 points.

Johnson led by three with 11 seconds left in the game, thanks to two timely free throws by senior point guard Shekeria Cooper. But Lady War Eagles senior Kasey Smith hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Smith finished with 11 points, Chestatee (4-7, 1-3) was led by Peyton Robertson with 14 points.

The overtime period was all Johnson after an early basket by Chestatee’s Robertson.

Cooper hit her first two field goals of the game, Aryelle Bagley hit a 3-pointer and Chapman scored eight of Johnson’s last nine points to seal the win.

Johnson returns to action at 7 p.m. Jan. 4 when it plays host to East Hall.

Chestatee plays next at 6 p.m. Jan. 4 at Class A’s Atlanta International.

Buford girls 42, Gainesville 32

The Buford High girls basketball team defeated Gainesville on Friday night in Buford.

Junior Blanche Alverson led the Lady Wolves (6-1, 4-0 Region 6-AA) with 16 points.

Michelle Godwin and Jocelyn Danley each scored nine, and Katie Lynn finished with seven.

Buford came out hot in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Red Elephants 17-10.

Sophomore forward Jaymee Carnes led Gainesville with 15 points.

Buford resumes play Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Jackson County Christmas Tournament.

East Hall 45, Pickens 34 (Thurs.)

Sada Wheeler led the Lady Vikings with 15 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night in Jasper.

East Hall’s Tierra Benton finished with 11 points and eight rebounds and Erin McGonigle contributed nine points.

East Hall returns to action Jan. 2 at 6 p.m. vs. West Hall.

North Hall boys 83, Johnson 57 (Thurs.)

North Hall senior Josh Haymore paced the Trojans, scoring 22 points including six 3-pointers Thursday night in Oakwood.

Andrew Peck finished with eight for the Trojans.

Brandon Sloan led Johnson with a game-high 23 points.

North Hall plays in the Oconee County Tournament on Thursday.
