The Buford High boys tennis team booked a return to the Class 5A semifinals Tuesday, defeating Ola High 3-0 in the third-round of the Class 5A state tournament at Buford City Park. With the win, the top-seeded Wolves advance to play the winner of defending state champion Starr’s Mill and Carrollton at a time and date to be determined. It marks the first time both Buford tennis programs have advanced to the semifinals.
The Lady Wolves advanced with a quarterfinal victory over South Effingham on Monday.
“It's just cool, it’s a real special thing,” said Sean Gilbert, who coaches both Buford teams. “Our boys played well today, probably one of their best matches of the year. They looked really sharp today.”
Winners for Buford were senior Dalton Counts at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1), followed by senior Cameron Deloach/Alex Pruitt at No. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-2) and senior No. 2 tandem Kurt Knudsen/Trent Milton (6-0, 6-0).
Buford No. 1 Brady Todd (6-2, 5-0) and No. 3 Luke Davidson (6-0, 5-0) were also on the verge of winning their singles matches when play was called.
