High school tennis: Gainesville girls, Buford boys advance in state tournament

The No. 3 seeded Gainesville girls tennis team pulled off an upset in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, taking down No. 2 seed South Paulding 3-2 in Douglasville. 

Freshman Avery Vlassis clinched the matchup for the Lady Red Elephants, gutting out a 7-5, 7-6 win at three singles. Hannah Williams at line two singles and the team of Hannah Wagner/Savannah Brown at two doubles picked up the other points for Gainesville.

The Lady Red Elephants will be at home for the second round, hosting Centennial next week at Longwood Park.

BUFORD BOYS 3, RIVERWOOD 0: The Wolves rode the strong singles play of Brady Todd, Dean Kingsley and Luke Davidson, who dropped only one game between themselves to claim victories in all three singles lines.  

With the win, Buford advances to the quarterfinals of the state tournament, and will take on the winner of Thomas County Central and Statesboro.

CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 3, FLOWERY BRANCH 1: Olivia Nance had the only win for the Lady Falcons, claiming a 6-3, 6-0 victory at line three singles.
