High school scoreboard: Tia Shelton leads Gainesville to win over Habersham Central in Region 8-6A tournament

Tia Shelton finished with a team-high 28 points for Gainesville in a 69-49 victory over Habersham Central in the quarterfinals of the Region 8-6A tournament. The win guarantees Gainesville a spot in state playoffs. 

Also for the Lady Red Elephants, Tija Blackwell scored 24 points, while Sadie Roach had 11. 

On Friday, Gainesville faces Lanier at 7 p.m. in the tournament’s semifinal match. 

BUFORD GIRLS 65, CEDAR SHOALS 23: Tate Walters scored 17 points for the Lady Wolves (23-2) in the semifinals of the Region 8-5A tournament on Thursday at Walnut Grove High. Buford led 48-5 at halftime, securing a home game to open the state tournament next week. 

At 7 p.m. Friday, Buford will face the Clarke Central/Loganville winner for the region title.

BANKS COUNTY BOYS 65, RABUN COUNTY 61: Carl Cleveland recorded a double-double for the Leopards with 19 points and 19 rebounds in Thursday’s semifinal region tournament game. Pierce Martin and Clay Gosnell also chipped in with 18 and 10 points respectively. 

Banks County will face the winner of Elbert County/Union County at 8:30 p.m. today. 


GAINESVILLE GIRLS 4, WEST HALL 1: Winners in singles for the Lady Red Elephants included Hannah Williams and Avery Vlassis. In doubles, Page Thompson and Callie Patterson had one win, while Savannah Brown and Hannah Wagner picked up a pair of wins on Thursday.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 5, WEST HALL 0: The Red Elephants had Dylan Pineda, Philip Mady and Ben Burns win in singles. In doubles, Michael Head/Caleb Anderson and Joseph Diaz/Matthew Carter also claimed victories. 

JOHNSON GIRLS 5, CHEROKEE BLUFF 0: Winners in singles were Anna Cooper, Morgan Langley and Haley Grimes. In doubles, wins came from Zoey Blankenship/Beth Odum and Viviana Medina/Grace VanHooser. 

Johnson visits Dawson County on Tuesday.
