The Gainesville girls golf team shot a 252 among its top three players to take first place at the Area 2-6A meet at Apple Mountain Golf Club in Clarkesville. The Lady Red Elephants outscored second place Lakeside-Evans by 28 strokes.

With the win, the Lady Red Elephants will play in the two-day Class 6A state championship, starting May 20 at Woodmont Country Club in Canton.

The Gainesville boys team finished tied for third at the tournament with a team score of 311. The Red Elephants’ top-five finish was also good enough for the team to qualify for the state tournament.

High school scores can be reported each night by 10:30 p.m. by calling 770-718-3415 or email
