Gionni Williams threw a pair of touchdown passes to D.J. Miller and JD Brooks rushed for another score as Gainesville beat No. 8 Mary Persons, 27-21, to open the season at City Park Stadium.

In 2018, the Red Elephants opened with a 42-0 loss to the same squad in Forsyth.

“This win was validation for every snap, every practice, every rep our players had in the offseason,” Gainesville coach Heath Webb said. “I’m so proud they were able to go out and erase the memory of that game last season.”

Giovanni Martinez had field goals of 38 and 27 yards for the Red Elephants.

Gainesville scored first on Martinez’s field goal late in the first quarter.

Webb also commended his guys up front for good play.

“Our offensive and defensive lines had a really good night,” Webb said.

On Friday, Gainesville visits North Forsyth in Coal Mountain.
