High school basketball: North Hall girls program locks up spot in Region 7-3A championship

North Hall locked up a spot in Region 7-3A championship game, beating Dawson County 71-43 in the tournament semifinals on Friday in Gainesville. 

With the win, Lady Trojans will host Greater Atlanta Christian for the No. 1 spot to the Class 3A state tournament at 6 p.m. today. 

With the semifinal victory, North Hall has assured itself at least one home playoff game next week. 

“We defended better today” North Hall coach Kristi House said. “It was all around a great game and we really played hard.”  

Maci Gillespie added 11 points to the score for North Hall, while Ansleigh Ferguson chipped in 10.  

For Dawson County, Clemson signee Kaylee Sticker finished with 17 points, while Sophia D’Oliveira followed with 12 as they prepare to face Cherokee Bluff in the third-place game at 3 p.m. today, also in Gainesville. 

The North Hall girls basketball program last won region in 2012.  

GREATER ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 58, CHEROKEE BLUFF 36: The Lady Bears were led by Maddie Thomas with 12 points, followed by Timber Gaither with seven and Maddie Phillips with six in the semifinals of the 7-3A tournament at North Hall. 

Cherokee Bluff faces Dawson County for third place at 3 p.m. today in Gainesville. 

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY BOYS 37, ATHENS ACADEMY 32: Adam Cottrell recorded his 1,000th career point and led the Lions with 16 points in the Region 8-A semifinals on Friday. Also for Lakeview Academy, KJ Millwood scored seven points and had a team-high 18 rebounds. 

Lakeview Academy faces Riverside Military for the region championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY GIRLS 61, COMMERCE 34: Eliza Snyder led the Lady Lions with 18 points and six rebounds in the Region 8-A semifinal game. Sadie Thrailkill recorded an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double, while Jackie Allen scored 11 points for Lakeview Academy.

Lakeview Academy faces Prince Avenue for the championship at 6 p.m. today.

RIVERSIDE MILITARY 60, PRINCE AVENUE 51: Isaac Teasley put in 22 points with 14 rebounds for the Eagles (20-4) in the Region 8-A semifinals Friday in Commerce. Shad Dabney had 14 points and nine assists for Riverside Military, while senior Khalid Duke had 13 points and nine rebounds.  

Up next, Riverside Military faces Lakeview Academy for the region championship at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Commerce. 

LANIER CHRISTIAN ACADEMY GIRLS 56, FIDELES CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 43: The Lady Lightning claimed their first region championship title in the school’s history on Friday and were led by Madison Hughes with a 14 point, 13 rebound double-double. 

Also chipping in, Faith Wasden scored 11 points, while Loganne Wilson had nine. 

Lanier Christian Academy will play in the GICAA Division II-AA State 

Tournament next week at Truett-McConnell University in Cleveland. Opponent to be determined. 

BUFORD GIRLS 76, CLARKE CENTRAL 44: Blair Wallis had 17 points, followed by Sara Viti with 12 points and Ebony Grant with 10 for the Lady Wolves in the Region 8-5A championship on Friday at Walnut Grove High. Up next, Buford awaits an opponent still to be determined to open state next week in Buford. Game time is still to be determined. 

BANKS COUNTY BOYS 63, ELBERT COUNTY 51: Carl Cleveland finished with a team-high 30 points for the Leopards to place second in region. Dakota Orr chipped in eight points. 

Banks County hosts a state playoff game next Saturday, opponent to be determined. 

SOCCER 

FLOWERY BRANCH 5, GAINESVILLE 0: Maggie Wadsworth recorded a hat trick for the Lady Falcons in their season opener. Also for Flowery Branch (1-0), Mollie Langner and Larsyn Reid each scored one goal. Assists came from Anna Grady, Mckenzie Kent, Larsyn Reid and Maggie Wadsworth. 

Flowery Branch hosts North Gwinnett at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. 

WEST HALL BOYS 3, CHEROKEE BLUFF 0: Juan Aldaco, Andres Gomez and Luis Oleuin all scored one goal each for the Spartans (2-0). Daniel Guzman and Luis Oleuin each assisted for a goal. 

West Hall visits East Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
