Tech blanks Mercer to open NCAA tourney

ATLANTA — Mark Pope pitched a five-hitter and Tony Plagman homered twice in Georgia Tech's 10-0 victory over Mercer in the second game of the Atlanta regional on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets (46-13) will play Alabama, an 11-2 winner over Elon, in the second game Saturday. Georgia Tech had lost three of four.

Pope (8-1) had 10 strikeouts and no walks and threw 110 pitches, 71 for strikes. The right-hander's shutout was the first for the Yellow Jackets in a regional since Kyle Bakker in 2002.

Mercer (37-23) is making its first NCAA tournament appearance and had won five straight and 17 of 20.

Plagman went 5 for 5 with three RBIs. He homered in the first inning for a 1-0 lead and he added his 21st of the season in the third for a 3-0 lead.

Jay Dantzler and Jacob Esch homered for the Jackets off starter Brandon Love (8-4).
