ATLANTA - Georgia Tech sophomore safety Fred Holton, who was competing for a starting job, has torn his Achilles' tendon and is expected to miss the season.

Georgia Tech says that Holton was hurt in practice on Saturday.

Holton, from Thomasville, played in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2010. He had 11 tackles and forced one fumble.
Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh says Holton is "a really promising young player" who played well in the first 13 preseason practices.
