Malquist takes gold at Junior Olympics

Gainesville High graduate Paul Malquist won a US Track & Field Junior Olympics National Championship with the Lanier Running Club in the pole vault with a height of 15-feet, 9-inches on Sunday in Sacramento, Calif. Earlier in the week, Malquist won a bronze in the decathlon.

Flowery Branch High senior Erika Rucker took the bronze in the 400 meter run with a time of 54.95 seconds. Her third place finished was sealed with a strong sprint in the final 150.

Last Thursday, North Hall High graduate Ty McCormack claimed the national championship with a new personal best in the 5,000 with a time of 14 minutes, 45 seconds. He also took the silver earlier in the steeplechase.

Flowery Branch High graduate Kiara Woods was a fifth place finisher in the 3,000 (10:44).
