Three local paddlers have been selected to attend the USA Canoe/Kayak National Junior Kayak camp to be held Feb. 19-24 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

Stanton Collins, Tanner Easterday and Rebecca Westmoreland of the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club were among the 16 junior kayak sprint athletes that were selected for the camp.

The Under-18 paddlers qualified for the camp at the recent Fall Kayak Camps held Oct. 15-19 for the men and Oct. 20-24 for the women in Chula Vista. Twenty under-18 paddlers attended each of those camps based on the ranking they achieved at the 2010 National Championships on Aug. 26-28 in Oklahoma City. The 16 paddlers were chosen based on performance assessments conducted over three days on water and land.

“The objective of the camp is to give top-ranked athletes more time together in crew boats prior to the 2011 Junior Sprint World Championships,” said USA Canoe & Kayak National Development Director Mac Hickox.

“The selection criteria for the Junior Sprint World Championship team are still in the draft stages.”
