Buford High’s Jake Burnette signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.

He was selected as the first pick in the seventh round during June’s MLB Draft. Burnette, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, finished his senior season at 8-0 with a 1.75 ERA to help lead the Wolves to their first state championship since 1977.

He is the first Buford player to get drafted out of high school since pitcher Justin Curry was selected in the 33rd round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2006.

Burnette had signed to attend Georgia Tech, where is older brother Chase played.
