The University of North Georgia softball defeated the University of North Carolina-Pembroke 4-0 and 8-2 in a doubleheader on Monday in Pembroke, N.C.

Taylor Merritt scored a pair of runs for the Saints in game one to lead the team on offense. Callie Fernandez and Victoria St. Clair also scored runs for North Georgia (30-7, 10-2 Peach Belt Conference), and Ansley Phillips went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Buford graduate Melissa Dickie (9-3) recorded her third shutout of the season as she struck out four batters.

The No. 6 Saints play host to No. 4 Armstrong Atlantic State University for a doubleheader on Friday in Dahlonega.

NORTH GEORGIA 8, UNC-PEMBROKE 2: Merritt finished the day 4 for 8 at the plate for the Saints as she scored three runs in the second game of the night.

Karlie Gillam also had three runs scored, and Kayla Minger and Tiffanie Burns each recorded a pair of RBIs for North Georgia.

Courtney Poole (18-4) earned her sixth win in a row for the Saints, and league-best 18th win of the season.

Golf

YOUNG HARRIS MEN IN SEVENTH: The Young Harris College men’s golf team is in seventh place after the opening round of the Cherokee Valley Spring Invitational on Monday in Tigerville, S.C.

The Mountain Lions finished the round with a 326 on the par-72 course, while Adam Taylor is tied for second place overall at 74. Beau Gammage, Parker Hulme, and Chase Hankla are all tied for 26th place after carding rounds of 84 while Matthew Peeler is tied for 37th with an 87.

The 36-hole tournament concludes today in Tigerville, S.C.

NORTH GEORGIA MEN TIED FOR 10TH: The University of North Georgia men’s golf team wrapped up the first day of the Lander University Bearcat Classic tied for 10th of 18 teams with a combined two-round score of 616 on Monday in Greenwood, S.C.

The Saints carded a 304 in the opening round Monday, tied with five other schools for fourth, before carding a 312 in the day’s second round to sit with a 616.

North Georgia’s Aaron George, a Lumpkin County grad, finished the first two rounds with a 145 (71, 74) to sit in sole possession of third. Will McFarlin carded a 155 (79, 76) through the first two rounds with Zach Caldwell and Will Bracket close behind with a 157 (77, 80) and a 159 (77, 82).

The field will complete the third and final round today in Greenwood, S.C.
