Two former area standouts led the Truett-McConnell baseball team to a Game 2 victory in a doubleheader sweep, 10-0, 7-3, of Tennessee Temple on Tuesday.

In that second game, Jacob Brewster, a North Hall High graduate, threw four innings out of the bullpen to earn his first college win, and Greg Hayes, a Commerce High graduate, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Bears (5-3) host a three-game series with Virginia Intermont, beginning with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Basketball

SOUTHERN WESLEYAN MEN 102, YOUNG HARRIS 84: The Lions set a season record for assists with 21, but couldn’t overcome a big second-half run from Southern Wesleyan and lost Tuesday night at Tysinger Gymnasium.

Frank Adams had six assists, while Matt Preston and O’Neil Lubin each added five for Young Harris (4-17). Adams scored 19 of his team-high 28 points in the first half, while Bryson Robertson, Preston and Steve Viterbo each added 14 points. Viterbo also pulled down 10 rebounds and Lubin scored 12 points for Young Harris, which hosts Hiwassee College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Softball

BRENAU UNIVERSITY OPENS WITH A SWEEP: Ellen Black, a junior from Toccoa, went 4-for-7 from the plate in Game 1 and threw a one-hitter from the circle in Game 2, as the No. 18 Brenau University softball team swept a doubleheader with Bryan, Tenn., 11-0, 14-1, to open the season Monday in Gainesville. Both games ended after five innings due to an 8-run mercy rule.

Black hit two home runs on the day and had six RBIs for the Golden Tigers (2-0).

Sophomore Anna Maness threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts in the first game for Brenau, which travels to Jackson, Miss. for the Belhaven Sweet Sixteen tournament. The Golden Tigers will open play at 10 a.m. Friday against Southern Nazarene.

Regional events
