The North Georgia College & State University Saints golf team is in sole possession of eighth place after round one of the 2011 Jay Jennison Memorial Tournament in St. Augustine, Fla on Monday.

The Saints shot an aggregate score of 14-over par and are 11 strokes behind fellow Peach Belt Conference school Armstrong Atlantic, currently in first place.

Leading the way for North Georgia was Grant Rish, who shot his lowest round as a member of the team. He is in a nine-man tie for sixth place.

In his first collegiate tournament, Lumpkin County High graduate Aaron George shot a two-over-par 74.

The former Indian recovered from a triple bogey on the seventh with back-to back birdies in eight and nine, two of his four total first round birdies. He sits in 22nd place heading into the second round.

Cross Country

The Brenau Golden Tigers cross country team competed in the Southern Wesleyan Warrior Invitational on Sunday Morning.

The Southern Wesleyan Warriors finished first on their home course, with the Golden Tigers coming in fourth.

Brenau freshmen Brittany Aikens, earned second place in the meet, with a time of 20 minutes, 12 seconds. Following close behind were Ana Lopera who finished at 22:59, and Ashley Tolland who completed the course in 23:17.

PIEDMONT MEN FINISH THIRD: The Piedmont College men’s team placed third in the Chattanooga Cross Country Festival held Saturday, while the women’s squad finished eighth.

On the men’s side, Wesley Milton came in 11th with his time of 30:54. Chez Maxwell came in just one second behind Milton to finish 12th, while Trey Martin crossed at 31:30 to finish 16th. The women were led by freshman Holli Abernathy, who finished with a time of 26:05, good for 13th.

Both cross country squads run again at 4:30 p.m. on Friday when they travel to Stephens County for the Toccoa Falls Invitational.

Volleyball

LADY LIONS SWEEP PAIR OF CONFERENCE MATCHES: Piedmont College played two Great South Athletic Conference opponents Saturday at LaGrange to open its league title defense, beating Salem 25-12, 25-10, 25-16 and LaGrange 25-22, 25-23, 25-23.

The Lady Lions (13-2) will play today in Gainesville at 7 p.m. against Brenau.

BRENAU LOSES IN FOUR SETS: The Golden Tigers traveled to Brewton-Parker College on Friday and lost matches to Brewton-Parker 25-15, 25-20, 32-30, 25-25. The Barons overwhelmed the Golden Tigers 15-25, 25-20, 30-32, 22-25.

Soccer

LIONS FALL SHORT IN WILD FINISH: Piedmont College dropped a 4-2 decision to Sewanee University on Sunday in Demorest. Trailing 3-0 in the 86th minute, the Lions scored a pair of goals in less than two minutes of play to bring the score to 3-2. Sewanee scored one minute later, putting the match out of reach for the Lions.

Piedmont (2-5) will look to snap their current losing streak of three games at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when they travel to LaGrange College in their first league test of the season.
