The fourth-ranked University of North Georgia softball team split a doubleheader Friday at the Diamond9 Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.
The Nighthawks won Game 1 handily, 9-3, before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, the Nighthawks (15-5) scored six runs in the bottom of the second with a Hannah McSwain (1 for 3) RBI double to center field, a three-run homer from Sydney Sprague (1 for 3) and a two-run double from Kaylyn Anthony.
The Nighthawks added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Starting pitcher Kylee Smith picked up her ninth win from the circle after striking out seven, walking four and only allowed six hits over six innings.
Shelby Hammontree (1 for 2, 2 RBI) drove in the Nighthawks only runs in Game 2 with a two-RBI triple in the top of the fourth inning.
North Georgia continues tournament play at 11 a.m. today against Spring Hill before its 1:15 p.m. matchup with Eckerd.
MOBILE 5, BRENAU 4: The Golden Tigers took 2 of 3 lines in doubles but couldn’t keep up their strong start. They fell in the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 1 singles matches on Friday at the University of Mobile in Mobile, Ala.
Rebecca Pijls won in No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2), while Paula Rives won a contested match in No. 5 singles, 7-6(4), 6-1.
BRENAU 9, LOYOLA 0: The Golden Tigers swept all lines to finish Friday’s action at the University of Mobile in Mobile, Ala.
Maya Mammetgulyyeva (No. 1), Pijls (No. 2), Patricia Recalde (No. 3), Kirsten Dickins (No. 4), Paula Rives (No. 5) and Elizabeth Bielicki (No. 6) won in singles.
In doubles, Mammetgulyyevva and Pijls won at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Recalde and Rives won at No. 2 doubles (8-1), while Dickins and Bielicki won at No. 3 doubles (8-3).
