Piedmont senior and East Hall graduate Sada Wheeler was named the Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Wheeler has been key in the Lady Lions’ 6-0 start. She began the week with a strong performance in the Lady Lions’ conference opener, tallying 14 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks. Three nights later she notched 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in another GSAC win over Wesleyan.
Wheeler then helped Piedmont past in-state rival Emory with a 24-point performance that included another 14 rebounds and four blocks. For the season, she averages team highs of 17.8 points and 15 rebounds per contest, along with 33 of the team’s 46 blocks. That total is more blocks than any other GSAC team combined.
The Lady Lions resume play Saturday at Toccoa Falls College.
JENKINS NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Freshman Jessie Jenkins was named the GSAC Player of the Week for his performances last week.
The team leader in rebounds and field goal percentage, Jenkins recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the Lions’ loss to Oglethorpe University. Three days later, he scored 32 points and grabbed another 10 boards in a win over Free Will Baptist Bible College.
The 6-foot-3 guard from McDonough is averaging 19.4 points and 7.6 boards per game to anchor a team that leads the conference in scoring at nearly 83 points per contest.
Piedmont travels for a game versus Pensacola Christian College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
