ATLANTA — A 10th-inning meltdown set the stage for a postgame shake-up of Atlanta’s bullpen.

Nick Masset allowed three runs without getting any outs as the Braves wasted another strong start by Shelby Miller in Sunday’s 4-0, 10-inning loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Dana Eveland replaced Masset with the bases loaded and gave up Ryan Howard’s tiebreaking sacrifice fly.

Following the game, Masset and Eveland were designated for assignment. The Braves recalled right-hander Arodys Vizcaino from Gwinnett and selected the contract of right-hander David Carpenter from the Triple-A farm team.

This marked only the 10th time since the Braves moved to Atlanta for the 1966 season that the team did not score in an extra-inning game.

“He did his job,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of Miller. “Nine times out of 10, we win that game. … There’s always one guy on the staff that doesn’t get any run support.”

Miller gave up seven hits and struck out eight in 6 À innings, lowering his ERA to 2.07. He is 0-3 in eight starts since a May 17 win at Miami despite a 2.80 ERA in that span.

“Obviously a tough loss,” Miller said. “Would have loved to have had this one.”

Odubel Herrera singled off Masset (2-2) leading off the 10th and broke for second when Cesar Hernandez lined a single into left field for his third hit.

Masset walked Mikael Franco, loading the bases, and Howard’s fly ball to right field off Eveland, a left-hander, scored Herrera.

Carlos Ruiz hit a two-run double to off rookie Jake Brigham and scored on a single by Freddy Galvis.

Luis Garcia (3-3) pitched out of a first-and-third, one-out jam in the ninth. With left fielder Cody Asche positioned beside second base in a five-man infield, Pedro Ciriaco flied to Herrera in shallow center. Asche returned to his normal position, and pinch-hitter Juan Uribe struck out.

“The bottom of the ninth was the key to the whole game,” Gonzalez said.

Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels allowed six hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts.

Franco singled leading off the eighth and was running from second base when right fielder Nick Markakis charged toward the infield to make a diving catch of a weak fly ball hit by Carlos Ruiz off Jim Johnson. Franco scrambled back to second base before Asche grounded out to Simmons.

Atlanta closed its clubhouse following the game to make the roster moves. Vizcaino and Carpenter will be with the team for Monday night’s game at Milwaukee.

The hard-throwing Vizcaino was suspended for the first 80 games for a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in an offseason trade for 2B Tommy La Stella.
Carpenter signed as a minor league free agent on Jan. 17. He was 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 30 games with the Angels from 2012-14.
