ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves have replaced one outfielder with a thumb injury for another returning from thumb surgery.

Matt Diaz has been activated from the 15-day disabled list. Diaz fills the roster spot vacated when rookie Jason Heyward was placed on the 15-day DL on Monday with a sore right thumb.

Heyward had the thumb placed in a cast on Tuesday. He is expected to remain in the cast for a week.

Diaz hit .313 with 13 homers for the Braves in 2009. Bothered by the sore right thumb, Diaz was hitting only .178 when he was placed on the DL on May 15. He had surgery on the thumb on May 19.

Right-hander Jair Jurrjens is expected to come off the disabled list to start against Washington on Wednesday.
