Game of the week

Buford vs. Loganville

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: Tom Riden Stadium, Buford

Records: No. 2 Buford (7-1, 4-0 Region 8-AAAAA); No. 9 Loganville (7-1, 4-0)

Chestatee vs. Marist

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: War Eagles Stadium, Gainesville

Records: Chestatee (4-5, 1-2 Region 7-AAAA); Marist (5-3, 1-1)

Game notes: Chestatee sits at fourth in the region standings, holding on to the last playoff spot for 7-AAAA. Marist has a head-to-head tiebreaker with West Hall and currently sits in second in the region. With a win tonight, Marist will be a lock for the second spot.

Who to watch: Nick Lyles, who didn’t play last week, has rushed for over 100 yards in seven games this season on the way to 1,226 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns. Lyles also has 183 yards receiving on 12 catches for three touchdowns.

Dawson County vs. Lumpkin County

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: Tiger Stadium, Dawsonville

Records: No. 8 Dawson County (6-1, 4-0 Region 7-AAA); Lumpkin County (4-4, 2-2)

Game notes: Dawson County can finish no worse than the No. 2 seed for Region 7-AAA. With a win over Lumpkin County tonight, the Tigers will host top-ranked Greater Atlanta Christian next week in a battle for the region title, with both at 5-0. Lumpkin County has not yet guaranteed itself a playoff spot, but it could lock up the No. 3 seed with a win tonight and next week against Union County.

Who to watch: For the Tigers, quarterback Coey Watson has been electric this season. The junior has thrown for 1,250 yards and 12 touchdowns, while only giving up two interceptions in 146 pass attempts. On the ground, Watson has amassed 506 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Indians backfield will be a big part of this game. Running backs Zach Matthews and Cole White, along with quarterback Chandler Woodham have totaled 2,359 yards and 22 scores on the ground.

East Hall at North Hall

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: The Brickyard, Gainesville

Records: East Hall (2-6, 0-4 Region 7-AAA); North Hall (5-4, 2-3)

Game notes: North Hall is still a bubble team, needing a win in the regular-season finale to stay in the hunt for one of the four spots. Both Lumpkin County and Union County remain above the Trojans, each having only played four region games. The matchup between the two on Nov. 4 could decide the third and fourth playoff spots, potentially knocking North Hall out. East Hall is out of playoff contention.

Who to watch: Kyle Bacus has carried the ball 200 times for North Hall, scoring 14 touchdowns and covering 1,183 yards. For East Hall, quarterback Austin Parker has completed just over 52 percent of his passes for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns. Parker has also rushed for a score this season with 245 yards on the ground.

Gainesville at Apalachee

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: R. Harold Harrison Stadium, Winder

Records: Gainesville (4-4, 2-1); Apalachee (2-5-1, 0-3 Region 8-AAAAAA)

Game notes: The Red Elephants no less than the No. 3 slot in the playoffs for Region 8-AAAAAA with a win tonight over Apalachee. The Wildcats are in last place in the region standings. Apalachee could scrap its way into the playoff picture, but it would need help from other teams in the region.
Who to watch: DJ Irons has been the biggest producer for the Gainesville offense this season. Irons has completed nearly 60 percent of his pass attempts for 1,599 yards and 14 touchdowns.

West Hall vs. White County

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: West Hall Stadium, Oakwood

Records: West Hall (5-3, 1-1 Region 7-AAAA); White County (1-7, 0-2)

Game notes: West Hall will assure itself no worse than a third place finish in Region 7-AAAA with a win over White County tonight. White County will need to win tonight and next week against Marist to have a shot at a playoff spot.
Who to watch: Running back Tyrese Osborne has covered 667 yards with eight touchdowns on the ground this season for the Spartans.

Habersham Central at Winder-Barrow

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: W. Clair Harris Stadium, Winder

Records: Habersham Central (4-4, 0-3 Region 8-AAAAAA); Winder-Barrow (4-4, 1-2)

Game notes: With a win over Habersham Central, Winder-Barrow would guarantee itself a spot in the playoffs. If the Raiders hope to make the playoffs, they’ll need to beat the Bulldoggs tonight and pull out a win at home against Apalachee next week. Habersham Central would also have to have region-leading Dacula beat Winder-Barrow on Nov. 4.
Who to watch: Habersham Central’s offense has been stagnant since scoring 40 points at Chestatee on Sept. 23, putting up just 16 points in the last three games combined. The Raiders’ defense will need to be big and hold the Bulldoggs to a minimum if Habersham Central wants to remain in the hunt.

Jefferson vs. Stephens County

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: Memorial Stadium, Jefferson

Records: No. 4 Jefferson (7-1, 3-0 Region 8-AAAA); Stephens County (7-1, 3-0)

Who to watch: Jefferson running backs Colby Wood (902 yards) and Zack Boobas (434 yards) have combined to score 22 touchdowns for the Dragons.

Johnson at Cedar Shoals

When: 7:30 p.m. tonight

Where: Waters-Wilkins Stadium, Athens

Records: Johnson (0-8, 0-4 Region 8-AAAAA); Cedar Shoals (3-5, 0-4)

Game notes: Both Johnson and Cedar Shoals are sitting on the outside of any playoff hopes this season. This is Johnson’s first season under Jason Roquemore in which it played a region schedule.

Lakeview Academy vs. Towns County
