Phoenix 49, Vikings 28
Difference makers: Sonoraville quarterback Cody Long and running back Hunter Lay. The two backs combined for 453 rushing yards, which is more than the total offensive yards the Vikings accumulated.
Stat that matters: 0. The Phoenix did not punt a single time in the contest. The only drive for Sonoraville that didn’t result in a touchdown ended with a 49-yard field goal try, which missed.
Stat that matters: 4. The Vikings turned the ball over four times in the game with three interceptions and one fumble. One interception occurred in the end zone and another came on the play that resulted in East Hall quarterback Austin Parker being removed from the field due to injury.
Up next: Sonoraville advances to the second round; East Hall’s season is over.
East Hall was host to a playoff game for the first time in 15 years Friday night, but it was Sonoraville that came away celebrating as the Phoenix (8-3) won 49-28 at East Hall Stadium.
The visitors rushed for a combined 518 yards and scored all seven touchdowns on the ground.
“They’re an excellent team, a tremendous power-run team,” coach Bryan Gray said. “Our kids played their hardest, (Sonoraville was) just better. We gave it everything we’ve got. Hats off to a well-coached team.”
For the Vikings (6-5), the night took a scary turn with 20 seconds left in the first half when sophomore starting quarterback Austin Parker was injured. He was tended to on the field and ultimately taken off on a stretcher.
Gray said the injury seemed to possibly be a lower back injury, but he hadn’t heard an update on Parker’s condition immediately after the game.
“I’m going to check on that,” Gray said. “I know Austin. He’s a tough kid. He’s a leader and a winner. I know the whole time he was probably trying to get out of those straps to get back on this field.”
After staying down for more than 10 minutes, Parker was able to give the crowd a thumbs up on the way to the ambulance.
While Parker was still down, the Sonoraville players joined the East Hall team in a joined prayer for the quarterback, but the game didn’t end as friendly. The final minute of the game was ran off the clock as sidelines nearly cleared two plays after the visiting coaches were angry about a non-call on a tackle on their sideline.
Four personal foul flags were thrown, all off-setting, but the damage was done. Both coaches agreed to run the clock down and the Vikings’ season came to a close.
Gray said it was better for the game to end by running the clock rather than leaving the potential for further incident.
“They’re going to the next round, so they don’t need any more penalties and I don’t need an incident,” he said. “You get two teams that are committed to be the best they can and those things happen.”
Despite the way the game ended, Gray said the Phoenix are “a class team and a well-coached team.”
Sonoraville raced out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Quarterback Cody Long plunged in from 3 yards for the first score and running back Hunter Lay scored from 19 yards later in the period.
The Phoenix ended the first quarter with the ball and added another score with Lay striking from 7 yards.
Down 20-0, the Vikings needed just one play as Parker (17 of 25 passing, 213 yards, TD, 3 interceptions) found Noah Dyer for 82 yards and a score.
Four plays later, Sonoraville found the end zone again on a 50-yard run from Trenton Daniel.
Markese Jackson took over for Parker under center after halftime, completing 9-of-14 passes for 86 yards.
On the first drive out of the half, Jiel Vargas capped a four-play, 65-yard drive with a 45-yard run for a score.
Vargas scored the final touchdown of the game, a 25-yard scamper with three minutes remaining in the game. He ended the game with 128 offensive yards (83 rushing, 45 receiving) and two touchdowns.
Jackson ran in a 16-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He finished the night with 196 offensive yards (86 passing, 71 rushing, 39 receiving).
For Sonoraville, Long had 23 carries for 261 yards and three touchdowns. He also completed 2-of-3 passes for 28 yards.
Lay finished with 13 carries for 192 yards and three scores.
