Your Views: Were police ignoring crime while helping locked-out gentleman?

The Joe B. Sartain Jr. letter printed July 17 was interesting but confusing to me concerning action of police that pleased Mr. Sartain. First, if I was a retired lawyer, I would not have paraded my lack of awareness in leaving my vehicle running and locked without my possessing another legal-entry method. My confusion regarding function of police is whether their action, under the conditions described, was authorized at taxpayer expense while a bank robbery or other emergency may have been in progress?
