On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I offer congratulations to Mark Ruis of the Hall County Pretrial Services Division, recipient of the 2012 Liberty Bell Award; attorney Sam Harben of Harben, Hartley & LLP of Gainesville, recipient of the Judge A.R. Kenyon Award; and attorney Carla Walker of Whelchel, Dunlap, Jarrard & Walker, recipient of the Leadership Award.

All were presented by the Gainesville-Northeastern Judicial Circuit Bar Association during its annual celebration of Law Day.

I also want to commend all local bar members who contributed to the observance of Law Day, which featured keynote remarks by noted criminal defense attorney Edward T.M. Garland of Atlanta.

Law Day is intended to enhance public awareness of the importance of the rule of law and the judicial branch of government. Successful programs such as these are an inspiration to all Georgia lawyers as we seek to fulfill both our duty to help others and our high calling as stewards of the justice system.

Congratulations to the Gainesville-Northeastern Circuit Bar Association on an outstanding 2012 Law Day observance.

Kenneth L. Shigley
President, State Bar of Georgia
