On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I wish to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of Gainesville attorney E. Wycliffe “Wyc” Orr on his recent and very untimely passing.

Mr. Orr’s distinguished legal career was highlighted by his passionate advocacy on behalf of ensuring adequate representation and access to justice for the indigent through his service as a charter board member of the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council from 2003 through 2011. His efforts earned him the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented earlier this year by the Southern Center for Human Rights.

During his four decades in the practice of law, he served the legal profession as a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia and as founder and president of the Chattahoochee American Inn of Court, subsequently renamed after him. He also served his country as a captain in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps and his state as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

All Georgia lawyers can be grateful for the extraordinary life and service of Wyc Orr. We are inspired by his many contributions to the justice system, as we attempt to meet our responsibilities to serve others and help fulfill the constitutional promise of justice for all.

Charles L. Ruffin
President, State Bar of Georgia
