In response to a letter advocating abolishment of the Electoral College, a reader cites the 2010 census and states that since more than 80 percent of the U.S. population now lives in urban areas, abolishment of the College “would almost guarantee there would be a Democratic president in the U.S. forever.” If this is truly the case, it follows that election of a Republican president is apparently and in large part dependent upon an antiquated electoral system which has resulted, and could again result, in “election” of a president not chosen by a majority of the voters. The last time that happened, things did not go well.
